Scenario Generation
Scenario generation is the core feature of Altertimeline. It's the process of taking your "What if" question and transforming it into a detailed, imaginative alternate timeline. This guide explains how the feature works and how to get the best results.
What Is Scenario Generation?
Scenario generation is Altertimeline's AI-powered engine that:
- Accepts your "What if" question — You provide a scenario (up to 200 characters)
- Analyzes the scenario — The AI understands what you're asking and the implications
- Generates a timeline — The AI creates a detailed alternate timeline showing consequences
- Presents the results — You receive a comprehensive timeline with immediate, decade-long, and global impacts
The entire process happens in seconds, allowing you to instantly explore alternate histories.
How Scenario Generation Works
The AI Process
When you submit a scenario, the AI:
- Parses Your Question — Understands the core "what if" change you're proposing
- Considers Context — Thinks about historical facts, technological timelines, and real-world relationships
- Generates Consequences — Creates a logical chain of events showing how your scenario would ripple through society
- Crafts the Narrative — Writes the timeline in an engaging, readable format with specific details and examples
- Structures the Output — Organizes the timeline into immediate impacts, decade-long effects, and global consequences
What Makes It Work
The scenario generation engine is effective because it:
- Understands Cause and Effect — Recognizes how one change leads to another
- Considers Multiple Domains — Thinks about technology, economics, politics, culture, and society
- Adds Specific Details — Includes company names, technological developments, and concrete examples
- Creates Logical Chains — Builds realistic progressions of consequences
- Adapts to Tone — Adjusts the narrative based on whether you choose Serious, Funny, or Mixed
Generating Your First Scenario
Step 1: Navigate to Create
- Go to the Altertimeline website
- Click the Create button or navigate to the Create page
- You'll see the scenario generation form
Step 2: Enter Your Scenario
In the text field, type your "What if" question. You have up to 200 characters.
Good scenarios are:
- Clear and specific
- Focused on one main change
- Interesting to you
- Anything from historical to futuristic
Examples:
- "What if smartphones existed in the 1980s?"
- "What if the internet was invented in 1950?"
- "What if dinosaurs never went extinct?"
- "What if World War II never happened?"
- "What if India became the world's largest economy in 2005?"
Step 3: Select Your Tone
Choose how you want the AI to present the scenario:
- Serious — Analytical, realistic approach
- Funny — Humorous, entertaining approach
- Mixed — Balanced combination
Step 4: Click Generate
Click the Generate Timeline button. The AI will process your scenario and create a timeline in seconds.
Step 5: Explore Your Results
Once generated, you'll see:
- Immediate Impacts — What happens right after your scenario
- Decade-Long Effects — How the world changes over 10 years
- Global Consequences — The worldwide ripple effects
Tips for Better Scenarios
Be Specific
Instead of: "What if technology was different?" Try: "What if the internet was invented 30 years earlier?"
Specific scenarios produce more detailed and relevant timelines.
Focus on One Change
Instead of: "What if World War II never happened and the internet was invented earlier?" Try: "What if World War II never happened?"
One main scenario works better than multiple branching questions.
Add Context
Instead of: "What if printing?" Try: "What if the printing press was invented 200 years earlier?"
Context helps the AI understand and generate better timelines.
Be Creative
Don't limit yourself to realistic scenarios. The platform thrives on imaginative "what ifs":
- Mix different time periods
- Combine unlikely events
- Explore speculative futures
- Ask unusual questions
Use the Character Limit Wisely
You have 200 characters. Use them to:
- State your "what if" clearly
- Add helpful context
- Specify a timeframe if relevant
- Clarify what you mean
Understanding the Generated Timeline
Immediate Impacts
This section covers the first few years after your scenario occurs. It shows:
- Direct consequences of your scenario
- Immediate reactions from people and institutions
- Early changes in technology, society, or economics
- Initial opportunities and challenges
- How news and public opinion would respond
Example: For "What if smartphones existed in the 1980s?", immediate impacts might include how the technology would have been received, what companies would have emerged, and how communication would have changed.
Decade-Long Effects
This section covers the 10-year period following your scenario. It shows:
- How initial changes evolve and mature
- Secondary consequences that build on immediate impacts
- Industry and market developments
- Technological advancement
- Cultural and social shifts
- Economic trends
- Regional impacts
Example: Decade-long effects might show how smartphone technology would have evolved through the 1990s, what new industries would have emerged, and how society would have adapted.
Global Consequences
This section covers the long-term, worldwide ripple effects. It shows:
- How your scenario reshaped the entire world
- Impact on global economics and trade
- Changes to international politics and power structures
- Cultural and social transformations
- Technological and scientific advancement globally
- Environmental and demographic changes
Example: Global consequences might show how the world economy would be different with 40+ years of mobile technology and how this would have changed international business.
Generating Multiple Scenarios
Try the Same Scenario with Different Tones
Generate the same scenario with Serious, Funny, and Mixed tones to see different perspectives:
- Generate with Serious tone
- Go back to Create
- Enter the same scenario
- Generate with Funny tone
- Compare the results
Each tone will produce a unique timeline with different emphasis and style.
Explore Related Scenarios
After exploring one timeline, try variations:
- "What if smartphones existed in the 1980s?" → "What if the internet was invented in 1950?"
- "What if World War II never happened?" → "What if 9/11 never happened?"
- "What if dinosaurs never went extinct?" → "What if humans colonized Mars in 1995?"
Create Chains of Scenarios
Build on previous scenarios to explore deeper:
- Start with a broad scenario: "What if the internet was invented in 1950?"
- Explore a consequence: "What if social media existed in the 1960s?"
- Go deeper: "What if smartphones existed in the 1970s?"

Troubleshooting Scenario Generation
My scenario didn't generate
If your timeline didn't generate:
- Check that you entered a clear "What if" question
- Make sure your scenario is under 200 characters
- Try rephrasing your question more specifically
- Refresh the page and try again
- Try a different scenario to test if the feature is working
The timeline seems incomplete
If the generated timeline seems short:
- Try a more specific scenario
- Experiment with different tones
- Try a related but different "what if" question
- Check your internet connection
I want to generate again
You can always:
- Go back to the Create page
- Enter a new scenario
- Select a different tone
- Generate a new timeline
There's no limit to how many scenarios you can create!
Advanced Scenario Generation
Scenario Chains
Create a chain of related scenarios to explore a topic deeply:
- "What if the printing press was invented 200 years earlier?"
- "What if literacy became universal in the 1400s?"
- "What if the scientific revolution started in the 1300s?"
Comparative Scenarios
Generate similar scenarios with different variables:
- "What if the internet was invented in 1950?"
- "What if the internet was invented in 1970?"
- "What if the internet was invented in 1990?"
Compare how the timeline changes with different starting points.
Counterfactual Exploration
Explore what would have to be true for different outcomes:
- Generate: "What if World War II never happened?"
- Think: What would have to be different for this?
- Generate: "What if Hitler never came to power?"
- Compare the timelines
